Search
Engine 101
What is a search engine?
A website (such as Google) with a searchable directory (database, index, list)
of thousands of other sites. People use these search engines to search for information
on the Internet.
What are search engine spiders, robots, crawlers, webcrawlers,
knowledge-bots and knowbots, and how do they work?
These are terms used to describe
little "programs" that
search engines send out to "crawl" around the web searching for information
found on websites.
They will re-crawl the sites that are already listed in their search engine regularly
(maybe once a week) to update their database.
They will also be instructed by the search engine programmers to go directly
to your site and crawl it for the first time if you have filled out their AddURL form to list
your site with their search engine.
They gather data (information) from the text in the body of the pages, from the
meta tags in the HTML source code of the pages, and from the image alt tags on
the pages they crawl and feed it back to the search engines for processing and
possible listing in their index.
What does
it mean to "AddURL?"
It means filling out a form at a search engine website to invite their
spiders to crawl your site and hopefully list it in their index. The information
you will be asked to submit on the form could include your website title, website
URL, email address, a description and some keywords.
Things To Consider
Some search engines only receive their listing information from other search
engines.
You can not manually add to them.
Every search engine has a different time period until you can re-submit your
website
to them.
There
are thousands of search engines and directories.
This
is where PC Quacks gets it right everytime on time. |

Google
AdWord results vary depending on how much you are willing to pay
for each click through. Careful selection of keywords and clever
budgeting makes a huge difference. We are happy to show you how.

Manual Web Site Submission
Site Promotion and SEO Help
Probably the second most common dilemma webmasters face, besides designing a
website, is how to optimize it for the search engines to improve their ranking
and promote it in order to increase its visitor traffic.
Is
your website search engine friendly?
Your Source Code
The source code of your page plays a big part in performance,
stability and the way search engines read it. The source code
of your web page
should look something like this:
<!DOCTYPE
HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>PC Quacks</TITLE>
<meta name="Keywords" content="web design,hosting,mobile
computer repairs" />
<meta name="Description" content="We
offer the full package. Quality web design, reliable hosting,
mobile computer repairs & mobile tuition." />
<meta name="ROBOTS" content="ALL" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
charset=iso-8859-1" />
</HEAD>
<BODY>
Web page goes here.
</BODY>
</HTML> |
A
search engines point of view:
Type
= HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
Title = "PC Quacks"
Keywords = "web design,hosting,mobile computer repairs"
Description = "We offer the full package. Quality web design, reliable hosting,
mobile computer repairs & mobile tuition."
Content = "ALL"
Content = "text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"
Page Content= "Web page goes here." |
Things
To Remember
Make
your code neat and tidy.
Make
sure all the tags are in the right order and closed
properly.
Use
a code validating service or your design program
to check the code. There are many free online code
validators available.
The
W3C Markup Validation Service
If
you have removed scripts from the head previously,
make sure you still have a <BODY> tag. Sounds
silly, but check!
Use
a web site Link Validator.
The
W3C Link Checking Service
If
you use CSS. Use a CSS Validator.

Other Ways To
Get Out There
NEWSLETTER
Publish an e-newsletter and be sure to
put a subscribe link on every page of your site. Send an issue
out at least
once a month using "More Info" links at the end
of every article. The links should direct the reader to pages
at
your site where they can find more information on that subject. Check
out Fantastico in your cPanel.
ADDURL / FFA
Do a search on the net
using the terms "add url" and "ffa" or "free
for all" to find pages where you can add your site's
link free.
NETWORK
Post on message boards around the
net. Put a link to your website in your signature and post
it whenever
an opportunity arises.
EMAIL SIGNATURE
Put a link to your website
in the default signature for your email account.
GIVE AWAY LINKABLE GRAPHICS
Start
a program at your site whereby you give out a graphic that
links to your site. Examples would be an award, seal
of approval, safe site seal, or member emblem.
BOOKMARK
Be sure to provide
a "bookmark
us" button, link, or reminder on your site to get repeat
visits.
Grab
the free code for this.
GIVE SOMETHING AWAY
Offer free information,
downloads, links, samples, whatever would be applicable to
your site. This will better guarantee that your site may be
personally referred to someone else and that it will be bookmarked.
It'll help to initially attract visitors to your site and
provide an opportunity for them to explore further into your
site.
BUSINESS CARDS
Hand out personal or business cards
with your website URL on them. Leave them in stores and on
office bulletin boards. Hand them out at parties or whenever
an opportunity arises!

Free Business Cards Below.
AUTO-RESPONDERS
Sign up with an auto-responder
service that will send a reply email to anyone who emails
you or fills out a form. Customize the auto-responder message
and specify automatic periodic follow-ups. This feature is
available in your cPanel.
LOCAL MARKETING
Don't overlook the local
market in your area. People will usually be more interested
and willing
to visit the website of a local person and to buy from them,
so post flyers in your neighborhood, at supermarkets, corner
groceries, and library. Advertise your site in your local
newspaper, church bulletin, and school newsletter.
MONITOR YOUR EFFORTS
This is important in
order to throw your energies into what IS working and quit
wasting time on what's not. Using a link tracking service
will go a long way towards accomplishing this. Your cPanel
has excellent statistic programs monitoring your site all
the time. Check the reports. |
